Big games for Cookstown season kick off
19/09/2019

Cookstown will kick off the new season with big home encounters for the Men and Ladies teams this weekend.
Steelweld Park will see the start of the Kirk Cup campaign for the Men’s side as they take on Antrim while the Ladies begin their league campaign at home against Ballynahinch.
“It’s great to finally be back to competitive hockey after the summer off-season,” said Cookstown striker Mark Crooks. “We’ve had a really excellent pre-season with some quality opposition to set us up for what we hope will be a successful season.
“Safe to say, we are not playing at the league level we would wish to, but we will approach every game with the same determination and seriousness as we would if we were playing in the EYHL.
“Our aim is to get back to the top table of hockey in Ireland and with the squad that we have put together there is no reason that we can’t do that at the first attempt.
“We’d really love to put together a really good Kirk Cup campaign too and that starts on Saturday at home.”
Cookstown Ladies have an awkward looking match against Ballynahinch at home in Ulster Senior League 3.
“We want to get the season off to a winning start at home and will be going all out to get those early points on the board against Ballynahinch,” said Reds skipper Jessica Greer.
“We’ve had a really useful pre-season and Geoff has been working extremely hard to make sure we will be at our very best for this match.
“If we can put together all the ideas and tactics that we’ve been working on in training, I’ve no doubt that we will put ourselves in a really great position. It’s really about sticking together and working hard.
“If we can do that our league position will take care of itself.”
Cookstown III also start the season at home with a tough fixture against South Antrim II while Cookstown IV have the chance to get the year off to a winning start at The Glade against Mossley IV.
