Cookstown Hockey Club players win Silver at the UK School Games
Last weekend Ryan Millar, Matthew Rollins an Ian Sloan represented Ulster at the UK School Games in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Over 1600 athletes in 10 sports took part in the Games which began on Thursday following an opening ceremony in Gateshead International Arena. The Games were officially opened by Olympic Gold Medallist Amy Williams and Jonathan Edwards.
Ryan, Matthew and Ian were selected to play for the Under 19 Boys Hockey Team. This was Ryan’s and Matthew’s first time at the UK Games. Matthew started every match in the centre of defence and performed extremely well throughout the tournamernt while Ryan had spells in defence and midfield growing in confidence as the tournament progressed.
This was Ian’s third appearance in this competition achieving a silver in 2008 and bronze in 2009. Ian was asked to Captain the team this year and lead by example scoring 2 goals against Wales and 2 goals against Scotland. At the end of the tournament Ian was further honoured by being named Ulster’s player of the Tournament.
All 3 boys trained 3 to 4 times per week throughout August and are now eagerly looking forward to representing their school and club as the new season begins.
