Cookstown II have the toughest possible task with Dublin kingpins Monkstown standing in their way of a place in the third round of the Irish Junior Cup.
“It’s always tough going to a big club like Monkstown Hockey Club. I’ve no doubt that this game will be the same,” said Cookstown II captain, David Atkinson.
“We met them in the first round of the cup last season and probably played our best hockey of the year. We still lost 3-2 thanks to a couple of quick, counter-attack goals in the second half. That’s how dangerous they can be.
“It was a really disappointing result despite the talent they brought up to Steelweld Park that day. However, playing against guys who normally play in the EYHL really did help us get in the mindset of high intensity hockey. We were able to carry that style into our league campaign and we went on a seven-game winning streak after that game.
“We know we can match them. With a little bit of luck we can get past them this time.
“We’ve had a really good run over the last few games, winning twice against Lisnagarvey, beating Inst at Shawsbridge. We played really well for three-quarters of our League Cup semi-final against Banbridge last weekend.
“If we cut out our silly mistakes and play with the intensity that we have over the last few weeks, I think that we can pull off a real shock against Monkstown. But it will take all our squad playing right at the top of their game if we are to do it.”

Match is at Monkstown on Saturday 8th, Push-Back 2:00pm

KIRK CUP SEMI-FINAL

Cookstown’s much anticipated Kirk Cup semi-final against Annadale will take place this Sunday, December 9th, at 1.30pm at The Playball, Stormont, Belfast.
